Get your Emergency Kits Ready
Storm season has already begun in Kentucky. Not only are there heavy rains and winds, but tornadoes are a concern. During these times, you want to make sure you and your family are prepared. Storms can take a turn for the worst sometimes, so staying prepared is the best way to stay safe. Here are a few tips to prepare emergency kits, protect your home, and get your family ready for a storm emergency:
1. Trim Trees in your front and backyards
Pruning trees and shrubs can keep heavy branches from falling and damaging your roof or becoming dangerous wind-blown debris.
2. Prepare an Emergency Preparedness Kit
Let everyone know of the plan, and work out who needs what for specific needs in your preparedness kit. Here are a few items that everyone needs for their own kit:
- Non-perishable items of food
- First aid kit
- Flashlights
- Battery-powered radio
- Extra batteries
- Water
- Moist Towelettes
3. Anticipate Power Line Outages
Have flashlights and batteries on hand and make sure you know how to shut off the power to your home. Turn off the electricity if you see rising floodwater, downed power lines, or need to evacuate.
4. Prepare for Evacuation, if necessary
Sometimes, storms become too powerful to shelter in place. Prepare a bag/suitcase/ or kit that can be by your side in case of an evacuation right before a storm.
